Follow Me Home Animal Rescue is working to reduce the high shelter kill rate in
Jefferson, Franklin, Crawford, and St. Louis counties. Animals are held in
shelters for a period of five business days, and then they can be killed if not
rescued by a group, or adopted by an individual. Animals that are surrendered to
the shelter by the owner can, and usually are, killed immediately. Most families
looking to adopt a dog do not realize that purebred dogs account for 25 to 30
percent of a shelter’s dog population.

In the last 10 years, the No-Kill Movement has been spreading across America.
More and more people are getting involved in the plight of stray, abused, and
abandoned dogs and cats. Homeless animals are not the government’s problem
alone, nor should they be. If each one of us does just a little, every homeless
animal in Jefferson County would eventually have a home!

Follow Me Home Animal Rescue welcomes children who want to help with
homeless animals. We have volunteer kids from 12 years old and up who help us
hold the dogs at adoption events. They talk to people about homeless animals.
They show younger children who come up to the dogs how to approach the dog,
where and how to pet the dog, and answer their questions. We believe that
getting our children involved when they are young will reduce the number of
animal abuse cases, the number of animals killed in shelters, and teach children
responsibility and compassion towards others as they learn compassion and
responsibility towards a family pet. Studies have shown that just holding and
petting a family dog or cat lowers blood pressure, releases “good feeling”
endorphins, and gives you a sense of, well, love!

I'm just wondering, because it seems to me that it is IRRESPONSIBLE on the part of these facilities to just take any dog someone shows up with....
-Do they scan them for microchips?
-Do they really think the the "same" people just have an endless supply of unwanted dogs?
-What are the regulations for "purchasing" a dog from someone for research?

THERE ARE TOO MANY Stolen and Suspiciously Missing DOGS! (Maybe cats too?)

Does anyone have any other info? Is this where the majority of stolen animals go? Or are they just being resold to the general public for a profit?

It seems like the stolen animals, especially dogs, are just RAMPANT- is there anything we can do to stop this?

How do I get to the Animal Care & Control Center at 2120 Gasconade Street?
Take Interstate 55 south from Downtown St. Louis to the Gasconade exit, turn left onto Gasconade and then right into the parking lot. When coming up I-55 from the south, take the 4500 Broadway exit, turn left off the highway and then right onto Gasconade to the City Animal Center.

How do I register my pet in the City?
If your pet was vaccinated against Rabies at an area vet clinic and received a star shaped five-digit numbered tag your pet was already registered with the City by your veterinarian. If you just moved to the City or your pet was vaccinated elsewhere and you do not have the star shaped five-digit numbered tag, you need to bring a state ID, proof of your city residence, proof of your pet's current rabies vaccination from a veterinarian, and payment in the form of cash, check, or money order to 2120 Gasconade Street during regular business hours.

How much does a City Registration cost for my dog or cat?
A City of St. Louis pet registration costs four dollars ($4) if your pet is spayed or neutered or fifty dollars ($50) if you pet is unaltered.

The additional differential licensing fee for unaltered pets is per City Ordinance 65206, section 10.040.060, sub-section B.: The Health Department shall establish a fee of Fifty Dollars ($50.00) for each combined unit of corresponding vaccination-registration certificate and tag for the purpose of maintaining the system of vaccination-registration except that the fee shall be Forty-Six Dollars ($46.00) less for the vaccination-registration certificate and tag for dogs or cats that have been spayed or neutered. The fee shall be the same for all vaccination-registration certificates and tags issued, regardless of the length of time for which they are issued. Who can adopt a pet?
You must be at least 18 years old and apply in person. If you rent, we ask your landlord's permission before releasing the pet. The adoption process involves filling out an application form and meeting with an adoption counselor who will ask you questions about your home and your plans to care for your new pet. Our goal is to help both you and the pet live happily ever after.

What do I need to surrender an animal?
You must be at least 18 years old. You will need a driver's license or ID. No fees are required but donations are appreciated. Hours for animal surrender are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Do you need any help?
Absolutely!! The City Animal Center has a volunteer organization for persons 18 years and older. Please call and speak with the Volunteer Coordinator, Tuesday-Saturday, for more information.

Where do I file a complaint regarding animal related concerns?
If you have a concern regarding animals in the City of St. Louis please contact the Citizens' Service Bureau

Lily is a tranquil and elegant front delawed kitty. She is very good with dogs as long as they are good with her. She lets my fostered greyhounds smell here allthe time and she just lays back and lets them. She needs to be the only cat in the household because she wants all of your attention for herself. If applicable, our animals may be adopted with a spay/neuter and/or rabies vaccination voucher. A complete list of area veterinary clinics is available at the shelter. Some dog breeds may be adopted through rescue groups. Please inquire at the shelter for more information.

Like children, their personality begins to change as they become more curious, they begin to lose their baby teeth and new teeth come in. During this time, they are chewing on everything they can get their mouths on.

Potty training is another issue...
The easiest way to train dogs to ONLY go outside is to 'crate train'. Some people, for whatever reason..., don't believe in this method, but it does work.

If you get a new puppy... the world is new to it. It doesn't know that keeping it in crate is not normal. Normal becomes the life you have with your puppy.

Many people can't handle the 'growing process' and, feeling overwhelmed, put the puppy up for adoption or worse, yet.. just turn it loose...

To the puppy, YOU and your family are its whole world. YOU and your family are the most important things to the puppy.

If you cannot deal with the stress of a puppy, please, consider an Adult dog that has already been trained and is out of the puppy chewing stage.

I've always tried to (except on two occasions) adopt 'Adult' dogs and they have been wonderful animals!

An Adult dog will be just as loyal and willing to please, as a puppy. If you are a good animal parent, it will be thrilled that it has a family.

Okay, folks, this cat is a special one. One minute is all it takes to fall in love with her. When our volunteer photographer went to take her picture in the noisy Petco, she sat calmly on a chair, posing and purring. Then when you go to put her back in the cage she doesn't want to let go of you. She purrs the whole time. Where do you find a cat this sweet? This poor little 10 year-old is with us because her human was evicted and had no choice but to find a rescue to help. She seems very playful for a senior, so if you have it in your heart to look at an adult as opposed to a kitten, call for her!
