The black-necked crane is a medium-sized crane in Asia that breeds on the Tibetan Plateau and remote parts of India and Bhutan. We saw them feeding in 2009 in Bhutan in a field from a great distance - maybe 1,000 feet away and through a very powerful viewing scope mounted on an official observation platform designed to not disturb the birds.
These cranes, whose scientific name is Grus nigricollis, are a vulnerable Red list species whose populations are declining. It is 59” long with a 92” wingspan, and it weighs 5.5 kg. It is whitish-gray, with a black head, red crown patch, black upper neck and legs, and white patch to the rear of the eye.
THE ITEM OFFERED is on a papyrus-type paper, made from either pounded plant fibers or recycled fabric, likely the former given the location of its purchase. It is excellent condition and would look spectacular in a BLACK FRAME WITH A DARK RED MAT, both chosen to reflect the bird's natural colors.
Dimensions : 12” wide, 9” height.
