What better way to improve your look there than with a genuine mask made by artists in Venice, Italy ** , home of one of the world’s most outlandish Carnival seasons. Other famous venues for Carnival are Brazil, New Orleans, Cologne Germany, and many others, each with its own different and often unique spin on how to do and dress for Carnival.
There are cheap tourist versions of many masks. Although that type is made of flimsier materials than this authentic “fiberglass mold with plaster overlay”, both can be creatively artistic - but a “proper” traditional mask is made with fiberglass and is much more durable and holds colors and shapes for a much, much longer time.
We bought this mask in 2000 when we were there for one of the many visits we have made to Venice. And then, in 2023 I took part in the photographic experience of a lifetime - photographing mask-wearing artists who can spend up to a full year preparing their ‘get-up’ for each new year’s festival. Believe it or not, when I was there I met and photographed almost a dozen costumed participants who had flown there from the St. Louis area to take part in the festivities.
These costumers are far from reluctant subjects - they compete for the attention of photographers and take pride in how many ‘shutter fans’ they can entice. Believe me, there are many ! The more individual colors in any one given mask, the more versatile its use and placement can be - more possible coordinating matches than just a simple one color mask.
As you can see from my photos [ # 4 onward in the group ], the mask is just part of the bigger picture, but it is the essential element conveying mystery and anonymity to the person behind the story.
The first three photos here are of the mask for sale. It is signed and dated by its artist / maker, Rachele Giordano, 1999. All the other photos are from my 2023 trip. What an amazing experience it was !
** In 2025, the Venice Carnival will last from February 22 to March 4, with pre-carnival events starting on February 14. It takes place mainly at Saint Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco), where the festival's grand opening begins. However, you can enjoy the festivities in many other squares nearby!
