This offering has no connection to the current conflict being waged in Europe by Russia at this time.
These boots are in the style of the indigenous people in a part of Russia in the south of Siberia near the border with Mongolia. The peoples of southern Siberia are culturally similar to those of their neighbor country as well as to those in Tibet.
They were purchased on a 2010 trip to Kyzyl, the Tuvan capitol; the red dot on the map in the 5th image is the location of Kyzyl. The city is best-known for its geographical location marking the very center of Asia, and there is even a monument in the city referencing this. The Tuvan population was a traditionally nomadic, yurt-dwelling tribe, like their Mongolian neighbors.
I went there specifically to immerse myself in their unique form of “throat singing” which is unlike anything you have ever heard before. It may take some getting used to but it is hauntingly beautiful and moving and very difficult to learn, even for the Tuvans.
These boots, while completely authentic in styling, are not for wearing but are rather mementos for visitors to take home from Tuva.
They are certainly a unique and unexpected addition to a collection of geographically-diverse cultural styles.
To hear what I heard there, use this url below and you will be taken to YouTube for a most magical vocal performance, I promise. www.alashensemble.com
