The artists who produce these amazing works of art typically come from families who have done this sort of work over many generations. A center of such artistry is the city of Esfahan [ or Isfahan ] in western Iran, midway between Tehran to the north and Shiraz to the south.

We purchased this piece while on a trip there in 2008 and watched while the artist worked on others similar to this.
The painted piece is about ¾”, or 20 mm, wide and 1 ⅜”, or 30 mm, tall. The incredible detail is achieved by the artist’s use of a cat hair brush, sometimes containing only one single hair, as needed. That allows there to be very fine lines, almost tracings. The person depicted is the famous Iranian poet, Hafez, who wrote in the 12th century.
Image # 1 is the painting in its frame under glass, # 2 is a very-close shot of just the drawing on its black mat.
The piece is mounted on a black background, surrounded by a cream colored matting and is framed in a beautiful, intricately carved frame measuing 6 ½” wide and 8 ½” tall. The frame is for hanging on a wall, not sitting on a shelf, although it might be able to be adapted for the latter.
