I can find absolutely nothing at all online about this firm which is surely out of business by now. Many searches for the firm produce information about “ H. Upmann Cigars” for some odd reason but I don't know if they're related.
The text on the bottom of the box, shown in photo # 3, indicates the contents were made in “Factory No. 17” in the Second District of Richmond, Virginia. It contains strict admonitions to never use the box for any other cigars, probably having to do with the levying and paying of tobacco taxes. The inscription is very clearly carved into the wood.
It may have been purchased in the late 19th century or early 20th century firm in St. Louis, MO based on where its original owner lived.
Dimensions : 7 ½ “ wide, 3 ¼” front to back, and 2 ¼” deep. The lid is firmly hinged on.
