Some of the more famous characters include Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, Rowena, Cedric the Saxon, King Richard the Lionhearted, Prince John, Rebecca, Isaac of York, and Robin Hood.
Key activities in the story inlcude he Tournament at Ashby, the Siege of Torquilstone: A central battle where Saxons and their allies storm a castle to rescue prisoners, and the Trial of Rebecca.
An "Alta Edition" usually refers to a line of hardcover books, often illustrated, published by Porter & Coates in the late 19th century (approx. 1880s–1890s), which included classic literature and adventure novels. These were typically affordable, decorative editions geared toward mass consumption rather than rare first editions.
On the inside of the cover is a bookplate [ ex libris ] from the Concord Farmers’ Club Library. Initially I thought this indicated an origin in Concord, MA. Howver that appeared unlikely. Subsequently I found information about an organization by the same name which was a local historical agricultural group which itself is distinct from the (now closed) Concord Farmers Club venue in St. Louis County. The building of this group was at 10140 Concord School Road and was bought by the Lindbergh School District a few years ago.

This book is one in a GROUP OF BOOKS offered on Craig’s List by this seller where each has a strong literary pedigree, is also rather old, and have been passed down through generations. Physically they have a patina which some may call stains or other small bits of wear. Reading a book of this sort can bestow a feeling of appreciation of the effort put into its creation by the author and of others who have enjoyed reading the book before.
