Myles Coverdale was born in 1488 in Yorkshire, England. A key figure in the history of English Bible translations. Educated as a Catholic at Cambridge, he saw the corruption and joined the Protestant movement. He made the first complete Bible translation in the English language in 1535. This influenced the later Great Bible of 1539 (the first English Bible translation authorized to be read in the churches of England) and the 1611 King James Bible. Coverdale translated from Martin Luther’s (1483-1546 AD) German Translation (New Testament completed: 1522; Old Testament completed and full Luther Bible published: 1534). Coverdale also translated from the Latin Vulgate and from William Tyndale’s (1494-1536 AD) Bible (New Testament completed: 1526; Old Testament: Posthumously in the Matthew’s Bible of 1537). Coverdale also translated from the Swiss Zurich version of 1531, the first complete German Bible translated from the original Hebrew and original Greek for the old and new testaments, respectively, which came out a few years before Martin Luther’s.
Significant for the reformation movement, this book allowed for the common people of the era to read the word of God for themselves for the first time in the English common tongue and had incredible influence on their future and our present.
