African soapstone bowl from Kenya, carved by local artists
Soapstone is a relatively stable stone but one soft enough to carve. These designs of two elephants and a warthog are made by a special method. The stone is first stained for a base color, figures are painted over that, and the a stylus us used to scrape through the stain and the paint leaving white lines illustrating features of the animals. A beautiful piece.
8” wide, 2 ½” deep
We purchased it in Nairobi in July, 2000 at a business called Spinner's Web which is still in business, at >spinnerswebkenya.com<.
