This type of iron was made of, yes, iron ! It needed to be heated in or over a fire of some sort and then quickly used to smooth out wrinkles in fabric before it lost its heat.
A family heirloom, yes, but oddly enough, no one wants to use it for ironing - which itself seems to be a lost art regardless of what type of iron might be available.
It was made by the P&H Manufacturing Company but as I've found out, there are multiple companies in the metals industry with that same name, so I can go no further in finding its maker.
And yes, as usual, the national resale sites have ridiculous prices on similar items- see the last photo in the series.
Great for a bookend, a doorstop, a paperweight [ in a gale ! ], or something use if you were the kid in the funny movie “Home Alone”. Hilarious, unless you would be on the receiving end of its use as a defensive weapon !
