St. Louis’s Famous - Barr was the flagship store division of the May Co. Dept. Store company whose corporate headquarters were in downtown St. Louis and which, through mergers and acquisitions, both purchases as well as divestments, grew to have over 400 branches by 2006 when it was itself acquired by its current owner, Macy’s.
Back in 1982, the year of this commemorative cup, May owned less than those 400 but I cannot find concrete data on that. Because some of its major metropolitan areas’ store divisons had many, many locations, I’d guess that the 1982 May Co. had between 200 and 250 stores from coast to coast.
In 1982 there was a fierce competition internally between two divisions of the May Co., Famous Barr in St. Louis, and the May Co. of the Los Angeles area as to which division’s largest branch location would reach the hitherto thought-to-be-unreachable annual sales milestone of $ 40,000,000 for a given location or branch store.
As you may have guessed by now, a St. Louis Famous - Barr store came out on top, as evidenced by the message printed on the commemorative cup. It was the West County Famous, now still going strong in Des Peres, MO although many smaller former Famous Barr locations have sadly since closed. The mug on the left commemorates that achievement.
Those who were a part of that magical moment, and those who worked to build up the store in the years before that date, all worked very hard to make that happen.
Why do I now offer this cup now ? That will be a discussion that I would prefer to have face-to-face with the buyer of it.
The mug on the right, also from 1982, carries a much simpler general marketing message.
