Vintage Salves to fix everything that ails us - supposedly !
America has always loved the “newest, greatest, easiest, etc.” cure for what ails us. These two products apparently were all the rage in the 1940s. These two small tins may have been trial sizes as they are only about 1 ¼” wide and about ¼” deep. The second image is simply the reverse side of the three fronts in the first image.
The Smithsonian Museum of American History, no less, has some of the “666 Healing Salve” in its collection of Americana. The museum’s website says : “The indications or uses for this product as provided by the manufacturer are: For head or chest colds, headaches or neuralgia, irritation of throat or nasal passages due to colds, 666 Salve generally gives quick relief. Fine dressing for minor burns, sunburns, sores, etc”.
Their item stems from the 1940s, as does the one in this ad.
Dr. Sayman’s Salve is apparently still around, at least online, and in different packaging. Here’s what the firm says about its product : “The Original Skin Care Ointment and Protectant/Great for Itchy, Dry and Sensitive Skin/Treats Cracked Feet, Rough Heels and…???”
No promises to cure you now but nice additions to a pharmaceutical or medical collection or even one devoted to how we marketed our health care products in the 1940s.
