Commander in chief of the Russians honored by this bronze medal for his defeat of the French and the passage of the ADDA, forced April 27, 1799.
Born 11-24-1730. Died 5-18-1800.
After becoming the general of the Infantry in 1786, Suwarrow commanded in the Russo-Turkish Wars of 1787-1792 and won some crushing victories. For his accomplishments, he was made Count of both the Russian Empire and Holy Roman Empire.
He put down a Polish uprising in 1794. He became a close associate of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. He often quarreled with her son and heir apparent, Paul I. After Catherine died of a stroke in 1796, Paul I was crowned Emperor and dismissed Suwarrow for disregarding his orders. However, he was forced to reinstate Suwarrow and make him a field marshal at the insistence of the coalition allies to lead the fight against the French in the French Revolutionary Wars. Suwarrow was given command of the Austro-Russian Army, capturing Milan, and driving the French out of Italy by his triumphs at CASSANO d' ADDA, Trebbia and Novi. Suwarrow was made Prince of Italy for his deeds.

This rare bronze medal was struck by Matthew Boulton, a British metal maker of the 18th century. It commemorates Field Marshall Count Suwarrow for his victory over the French and the passage of the ADDA, forced April 27, 1799.

A fine 1799 coin. Rare. Also, of great historical importance. Meet to exchange or add $4 to send.
