Here is another great set of speakers from the Redneck Stereo Salon. We really enjoy listening to this series of B&W Matrix speakers, they have excellent bass response that is full but not bloated, clean, clear midrange and a non fatiguing high frequencies something not many speakers in this price range can lay claim to. Hooked to the right equipment these speakers have the ability to throw a huge well defined sound stage that expands past the sides and front of the speakers thanks to the quality drivers and the separate enclosures for all the drivers plus all the extra bracing in the woofer enclosure.
If you are looking for a speaker with a lot of extra bloated bass or tons of extra high frequency energy this is NOT the speaker for you. These speakers are extremely flat and neutral. People ask what does that mean? It is real simple if you want to hear exactly what is on a recording with nothing added to or subtracted from that recording then you would want to purchase a flat and neutral speaker. These speakers are well known world wide for their neutral performance that is why they are used in so many famous recording studios such as Abby Road Studios, Decca recording Studios and many more. At one point in history there were more B&W speakers in classical recording studios than any other monitors. If that doesn’t solidify its status as neutral speaker nothing does. Here lately this speaker has been referred to as a classic that puts it in some very elite company to say the least.
Well here is the story on these speakers. As with most of the older stuff we get in here these speakers were in very poor condition when they got here. Again we spent a lot of time and money to resurrect these speakers to their former glory. The drivers for all of the older model B&W speakers and even some of the newer ones are not available for purchase any longer. That leaves only one alternative hire a PROFESSIONAL (not a wannabe) speaker repair technician to test and repair the drivers to bring them up to factory specs with factory authorized parts. Sadly there are way to few of these type of techs in the states at this time but we know and use one of the best in the country so be assured if you buy these speakers the work on the drivers was done correctly and professionally and will perform up to specs for a long time if they are taken care of correctly.
Here is the work that was performed on these speakers:
(1) All drivers were tested and the divers that did not perform up to specs were rebuilt and the appropriate parts were installed.
(2) Crossovers were tested and performed up to specs. (out of the Matrix series the series 3
has the best crossover)
(3) New speaker cloth was installed on both bass cabinet grills.
(4) Speaker cabinet was professionally cleaned and treated.
(5) All electronic connections were professionally cleaned and treated to improve the quality of
the sound.
(6) Upgraded bi-wire jumpers that improve the sound quality and when using a single run of
speaker wire they allow you to hook up any speaker connector of your choice.
Technical highlights• Kevlar®: B&W developed and patented the method of using Kevlar® for loudspeaker cones to reduce unwanted standing waves. DuPont originally created Kevlar® for use in bulletproof vests.• Tweeter on top: B&W's Tweeter on top technology ensures that the sound remains focused and time-sensitive and that the stereo-image is presented with unparalleled three dimensional accuracy.• Matrix: The basic construction of nearly all loudspeakers is exactly the same - panels of wood-based materials, bonded to form a rectangular box. B&W studied and evaluated how each aspect of cabinet behavior and the efficiency of various materials and construction methods affects sound.
